Stories of generosity

Giving locally to build the Eyre Peninsula’s future

Volunteers at the Eyre Peninsula Book Bazaar Charity Bookshop

SA Giving Week is a time to celebrate generosity — and on the Eyre Peninsula, generosity has a powerful, long-term home with the Eyre Peninsula Community Foundation (EPCF).

Launched in 2010, EPCF exists to ensure that local people can support local initiatives, now and well into the future. As the region’s premier philanthropic organisation, the Foundation enables individuals, families and businesses to proactively contribute to the long-term wellbeing of Eyre Peninsula communities by building community capacity and supporting areas of greatest local need through charitable grant-making.

At the core of EPCF’s work is the notion that when funds are grown, managed and invested locally, the benefits stay local. By building a permanent public fund and maintaining strong governance standards, the Foundation ensures donations today continue to generate positive impacts for generations.

Over the past decade, EPCF has worked steadily to grow its corpus while forming meaningful partnerships with businesses, charities and community organisations. These partnerships have already delivered tangible outcomes across the region — supporting education, health, community services and grassroots initiatives that strengthen the social fabric of the Eyre Peninsula.

A significant milestone came in 2012 with the sale of the region’s first charity home in Port Lincoln, which boosted the Foundation’s corpus and enabled ongoing grant-making from investment income. Since then, EPCF has proudly supported over 100 charitable projects across the Eyre Peninsula, demonstrating how long-term philanthropy can create lasting community benefit.

Initiatives such as the Eyre Peninsula Book Bazaar Charity Bookshop have supported essential services like home hospice care, while education-focused initiatives including back-to-school vouchers and tertiary scholarships, have helped remove barriers and expand opportunity for young people across the region.

“Having lived on the Eyre Peninsula for over 25 years, I have a deep affinity, affection and commitment to ensuring our region remains resilient, robust and a wonderful place to live, work and enjoy.” — Garry Downey, Chair, Eyre Peninsula Community Foundation

This SA Giving Week, EPCF invites the community to be part of something enduring. Every contribution — whether a donation today or a gift through a bequest — helps build a stronger, more connected Eyre Peninsula.

This SA Giving Week, explore community foundations and consider how you can support your local community through trusted, place-based foundations and collective giving models.
